why do merle to merle breedings tend to be deadly?
I know that its something to do with the genes but is it just because whatever causes this coat color makes a bad gene that, for whatever reason, just causes severe physical mutations of the pups or is it something else?
I saw a living 4 year old merle to merle aussie which was seized from a mill and up for adoption they called the miracle dog because he was only deaf and partially blind...and four years old
The merle gene is a dilution of pigmentation. The pigmentation is the color that is in the skin. If you breed merle to merle, in other words dilute to dilute, you run the risk of eliminating the cells that allow eyes to develop and ears to grow the membranes and follicles to allow it to hear. This is why you so often see animals that are all white being deaf. Pigmentation cells are necessary for hearing. Sometimes in double dilute breeding you will see pups with micropthalmia, which means small eyes, or even no eyes at all. Only a very experienced breeder who is willing to take responsibility for the defective pups should consider a merle to merle breeding.
